In much the same way the reservoir lies buried and forgotten, so too is much of Welsh mythology. There are many possible reasons for this, including the dominance of Latin and Greek in Western education (at the expense of Celtic and Britannic tradition).
This is changing. Welsh mythology is becoming revitalized, championed by authors, poets and artists from across Wales. We’re making a cultural investment in this movement, both reflecting and refuelling the resurgence. What better way to do this than to animate monstrous creatures and mysterious tales in a dark, foreboding space like The Vaults?
Our discoveries and exhibits, in fine Victorian tradition, will explore the overlap between science, entertainment and storytelling. We’ll employ special-effects techniques like Pepper’s Ghost (invented by the Victorians). Modern-day projection tricks and soundscapes can collapse walls, they can grow dragons and mermaids, they can delight, frighten, astonish and thrill.
The Vaults will become a modern day Anwnn or Avalon; an otherworldly, magical realm far beyond normal human experience. It will become a Mecca for families, thrill-seekers, and culture enthusiasts.
